Night Landmarks

These night photographs, taken from a tripod-mounted camera, capture light that is not readily visible to the unaided eye. This series is a mixture of film and digital images. Exposure times ranged from one minute to 40 minutes, depending on the circumstances and medium. Colors shift because at these long exposure times, sensors and films capture certain colors much more readily than others. Some lights flare, while cars in motion blur.

These photographs reveal an uncanny world, in which moving cars become streaks of light, and unremarkable structures shine under unlikely lighting. They try to shift the valence of their subjects, making ordinary objects, like power stations and construction sites, into landmarks.
